Breakage of Particles

In many processes, particles can break or fragment into smaller particles. Particle size reduction occurs in many engineering applications and requires a good understanding when it comes to process design optimisation. MultiFlow contains a novel 3D model to describe particle breakage from first principles, using only the properties of the particle material as input. The model predicts the probability of breakage, based on the historic events a particle has undergone, and predicts the size distribution of the fragments. An example is given in the figure below

A particle approaching a wall: In the first step the decision is made to break the particle. In the subsequent step, the size distribution of the fragments are determined. Finally, based on conservation of energy, the fragments move away from the initial particle.
